Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain name extension is the single TLD meant for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to obtain john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level names remained operational.
